Training
Parent Partner Training - This training is available to family members of a child with special needs who feels they would like to volunteer to attend a 2 hour training to become a Parent Partner. This parent should feel comfortable with their child's disability. This workshop was designed to prepare these family members to be matched with parents of newly diagnosed children. These parents are trained in how to provide support and information to families who request a Parent Partner match.
What Am I Doing Here? Copyright 2001, The Arc of Virginia Family Involvement Project (Effective Parent Provider Partnerships)
Most providers, whether they are therapists, doctors, nurses, or educators, receive some kind of training on how to interact with the consumers they will work with. Parents however, find themselves members of many professional teams without the benefit of any training. This training was developed to help parents understand, and be effective, in their roles on the many teams they will work with throughout their child's life. Teams such as the early intervention IFSP team, the school's IEP team, or a child's medical team. Parents and providers will leave this training with useful partnership skills and information that can be put to use immediately.
